Inspiration Swamp

A dusty ol’ reference library trampoline

I recently realized I have slowly built a little walled fortress around myself made up of stacks of old books and hoards of craft manuals. In every one of these books there is at least one image that made my brain sparkle in some way and caused me to bring that book home with me for future use. This is my inspiration stockpile. Unfortunately I hardly ever revisit this fortress of mind sparklers. I decided it was time to go through it and see all of that buried treasure in a new effort I have decided to call Inspiration Swamp.

I am going to pick one item at a time and without any expectation or preconceived notion of an outcome, I will open the book and look for an image that makes the idea compartment of my brain come alive. I will use whatever I come across as a prompt to make something new. The first Inspiration Swamp exploration is based on this book: The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement

To see the full process watch the video at the top of this post. But for those who don’t wish to watch a video I will share the inspirational source image below and the project it inspired.

Based on the red and blue in the color palette, I painted a breathing cycle of these 3D glasses with gouache and then animated them.

Do you have an inspiration stockpile like this in your space? If so what kinds of things do you collect for inspiration? Would anyone care to join me in doing Inspiration Swamp exercises of their own? If so, I’d love to see what you make and what inspired it.

❤️ See you in the next installment of Inspiration Swamp. ❤️
